Interpreting for luxury brands requires a unique blend of linguistic precision, cultural sensitivity, and an understanding of the exclusive world of high fashion.

Working with luxury brands: a linguistic perspective

Luxury brand work has taken me backstage at fashion weeks and into boardrooms I’d never otherwise see. It’s demanding, and I enjoy it.

The language of luxury

Luxury brands have their own vocabulary. Terms like “savoir-faire,” “maison,” and “atelier” aren’t just French words. They’re carefully chosen to evoke heritage, craftsmanship, and exclusivity.

In luxury fashion, terminology isn’t just vocabulary. A word like “savoir-faire” or “maison” carries heritage; swap it for a plain equivalent and something real is lost. When I interpret for a fashion house, preserving that atmosphere is part of the job.

Cultural nuances

Italian fashion brands, in particular, carry centuries of cultural heritage. Milanese fashion houses carry a lot of cultural weight: family names, regional craft tradition, the tension between what they’ve always done and what’s new. All of that comes through in how they speak.

Behind the scenes at Fashion Week

Fashion week events are intense. Backstage conversations happen at lightning speed, and precision is non-negotiable. Whether it’s a fitting session, a buyer meeting, or a press interview, every interaction matters.

The best preparation is knowing the brand’s aesthetic well enough to feel at home in their vocabulary, and thinking through the conversations likely to come up. I read about the brand (their history, their aesthetic, their recent collections) before any assignment.

Building long-term relationships

The luxury industry values relationships. Working repeatedly with the same brands has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of their communication style, brand values, and preferred terminology.

I keep notes, glossaries, and brand terminology confidential. For ongoing client relationships that’s just how it works.
