Remote & Online Interpreting

RSI is real-time simultaneous interpreting delivered from a remote location rather than a physical booth. The interpreter works via a cloud platform and delegates listen on a language channel through headphones or an app. The cognitive process is the same as in-booth simultaneous interpreting.

Several platforms support RSI with a dedicated interpreter console and language channels. KUDO, Interprefy, Interactio, and Zoom's built-in interpretation feature are among those in use. Platform choice usually depends on the event organiser's preferences and technical setup. I can advise on what suits your event.

Remote interpreting works well for video meetings, webinars, online conferences, and many hybrid events. Some assignments require physical presence: an interpreter at an Italian civil wedding must be in person, as Italian law (Art. 66 and Art. 13 DPR 396/2000) requires the interpreter to take the oath in person before the registrar before the ceremony begins. Remote or telephone interpreting is not suitable for this role. A sworn translation (asseverazione) requires the translator to appear in person before a court official; it cannot generally be done remotely, although some courts allow submission by PEC or digital signature, so confirm with the specific court. The most useful preparation is sharing materials in advance: agenda, speaker presentations, terminology lists, previous meeting notes. The more context I have, the better the interpreting. For RSI, you also need a platform that supports language channels and interpreter consoles.

Yes. Hybrid events can be handled with RSI, where I work remotely while some delegates are in the room and others join via video. Good audio routing is important so the remote interpreter can hear the floor clearly.

Telephone interpreting (OPI) is audio-only consecutive or liaison interpreting over a phone or conference call. Without video, the interpreter loses non-verbal cues, so clear speech and turn-taking matter more. It is practical for urgent or short calls where video setup is not available.
